A Villain's Conscience

This quotation could reveal a reason why a criminal would decide to commit their crime. The first sentence, "The healthy man does not torture others.", could imply that each person is born with a similar conscience and therefore something must happen for them to behave differently. The second sentence, "Generally it is the tortured who turn into torturers.", states that a that 'something' that happens to them will reflect who they become. The word generally is very important here because it depends on how a person will deal with their past. They might not become criminals just because they were mistreated before...
The author of this quote is Carl Jung. Jung was a psychiatrist who is most known for his studies on dream analysis and of course, his work with Freud. We looked at his work a bit last year from what I can remember. He lived from 1875 through 1961. I believe this quote reflects his opinion that the human psyche is "by nature religious". This is significant to my concept Conscience because Carl Jung believed that we are born with religious morals and in turn, we would be born with a similar conscience. Then when something (like torture) happens, this religious nature is corrupted and one could become a torturer, depending on how they deal with the events of their past that swayed them...
